Is it safe to travel in Kenya?
Obviously it would be unreasonable to say anywhere in the world is 100% safe. It is just as possible to be at risk in London, Stratford-on-Avon or Edinburgh. In theory you are as safe in Kenya as any other country. Don't worry, you won't be eaten by lions!
When is the best time to travel?
The weather will be amenable for 12 months of the year, although in winter (June, July) it is likely to be chilly in the evenings. The coast is always hot, being almost on the equator. However, if you wish to avoid the rainy seasons it is best to avoid October when the likelihood of heavy rain is at its greatest.
The great wildebeest migration takes place in June and October, however, as this is a moveable event no guarantee can be given that it will be seen.
What is the currency of Kenya?
The local currency is Kenyan shillings. The most useful currencies to take to Kenya are US$, Sterling or Euros. Most well known credit cards are accepted in hotels and restaurants.
What is the electricity supply?
Plugs are standard 3pin as in the U.K. with a 240volt supply.
What medical precautions are needed?
You will need yellow fever , typhoid and hepatitis 'A' protection as well as malaria. You will need to contact your own doctor or specialist clinic for advice.
What luggage allowance can I take?
If travelling by plane within Kenya most light aircraft will allow 12kgs. in a soft bag, however travel by road is not subject to the same restrictions.
Is a visa necessary?
You will require a visa, which at present costs $25 but may be subject to change. This is normally obtained at the airport on arrival at Nairobi.
What is the main language?
Swahili is the main cross tribal language, however almost all Kenyan's will speak English and you will not encounter any difficulties. All shops, hotels and lodges employ English speaking staff.
What is the rule on tipping?
Tipping at restaurants is done at your discretion. Tipping at hotels and lodges is not expected, other than carrying your luggage, unless you have received exceptional service and you wish to show your appreciation. However, it is customary that drivers/tour guides are tipped at the end of a safari. You will be advised at what this rate would be.
Most Kenyan nationals only earn between $1 and $5 a day for unskilled workers and $5 - $10 for skilled workers so all gratuities are welcome.
